Terra Nova University's distance learning programmes follow an open curriculum rather than a list of structured courses. The university and the academic department establish a customised path according to the needs, interests, opportunities and demands from the real world on which each student bases his or her professional experience. Terra Nova University offers postgraduate programmes for adult students at doctoral level, in a wide range of courses and areas of study. Study programmes are suitable for senior students with at least 30 years of age and 3 years of professional experience.
TNU's strengths are the PhD, DBA and DPS programmes that are conducted by Research. This is a very important methodology that allows students, who are already engaged in the world of work, not to follow a standard course of classroom lectures or campus engagements, but to demonstrate, through research, professional competences aimed at obtaining a degree for skills certification.

APEL is a model of education, usually for adult learners, which takes into account each individual student's prior studies and experience. APEL and prior learning assessment are based on a proven process and set of mechanisms that transform experience into finalised academic credits. The main objective is to determine the correct academic standing of students for their placement in their chosen field of study. This is achieved through the recognition of the learning that students have acquired through experience, professional training, workshops, seminars or other study experiences. In essence, an APEL-based course enables a reduction in study time as the student's prior experience is evaluated as academic credits.
